Whitewater rafting is such a thrilling way to see and experience a rushing river. Perhaps because it is so different from what the average person experiences on a normal day, people tend to have a lot of questions before the first time they head out to whitewater raft. Hopefully, you discover the answers below.
Just how treacherous will the river be?
Chances are, if you have never been rafting before and are going with other relative beginners, the river won't be as treacherous as you think. When it comes to whitewater rafting, rivers are rated on a scale from 1 - 5. Class 5 rivers are dotted with waterfalls and whirlpool rapids — the type of water you may see professional rafters navigating on TV. Class 1 or Class 2 Rivers are much quieter, with Class 2 rivers having some mild rapids here and there — just enough to keep things interesting. Most tour groups take beginners down Class 2 rivers.
Will you fall off the raft?
Hopefully, you don't fall off the raft, but it is a real possibility. This is why you always whitewater raft in a life jacket and helmet. Most rafting companies also have you take a safety course before you embark. In that course, you will learn what to do if you fall off the raft. The basics are: hold onto the boat if you can. Don't move too far, and wait for the raft to come back and get you.
What should you wear?
Many people wear their bathing suits, but you can really wear whatever is comfortable. Shorts and a t-shirt are just fine. Synthetic fabrics do tend to be better than cotton since they don't get so heavy when wet. A wide-brimmed hat is helpful for keeping the sun off your face, but make sure it has a cord that goes down around your neck, or else you might lose it in the water.
How strong do you have to be?
Since you're paddling the raft, it does help to have some strength. But if you are not too strong, it's not the end of the world, and you can certainly still raft. The rapids and the flow of the river move you along, and the other paddlers on the raft do part of the work, too.
Whitewater rafting can be such a fun and invigorating adventure. You have a lot to look forward to!
