If you're scared to jump out of a plane by yourself as a skydiver, another option is to perform a tandem skydive. The skydiver does all of the work himself or herself and you simply enjoy the ride. The skydiving rig that is used for tandem skydiving is usually different from the type of rig used for solo skydiving. A drogue parachute is used to slow down the skydiver's terminal velocity. This makes the skydive longer and also allows for the parachute to more easily open. Before participating in a tandem skydiving lesson, there is much you must do to prepare.
Meet The Age And Weight Requirements
You usually must be at least 18-years-old. There is also usually a maximum weight limit. However, the weight limit is based on the size and strength of the instructor.
Wear The Proper Clothing
While participating in the jump, make sure that you were wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. The clothes should be warm since the temperature can be much lower at higher altitudes. Wear shoes that are very sturdy and will not easily come off. Make sure your shoes are laced tightly. When jumping with glasses or contacts, talk to the skydiving instructor about whether they have special goggles that will protect your eye wear.
Take Something For Motion Sickness
If you suffer from motion sickness, you do not have to pass over skydiving. Find and take a medication beforehand that will alleviate the symptoms.
Learn About The Drop Zone
The United States Parachute Association has designated drop zones that you should consider selecting when looking for a place to skydive. Also, the larger the drop zone, the more likely that you may be able to be a walk-in instead of making an appointment.
Have Your Pictures Taken Or A Video Recorded
Usually, for an additional fee, you may have your pictures taken or even have a video recording of your jump to help create memories of the experience. However, you are usually not allowed to bring your own camera.
Consider Other Forms Of Skydiving
Even if you want to learn how to engage in solo skydiving, it is a great idea to give tandem skydiving a chance. Doing so will give you an opportunity to work up some confidence and to get a better understanding of how skydiving works. Other forms of training include instructor-assisted free-falling and static line. Static line is less expensive. However, you should give tandem skydiving a try at least once because it is enjoyable to have the skydiving instructor take over so you can simply focus on the experience.
